Pete Steen grew up in the valley attending Palmer High school and graduating in 1993. He then graduated from Chadron State College in 1998 with BA in Criminal Justice, during his time in college he worked for not only the Dawes County Sheriff’s office but also the Chadron Police Department.
Pete attended the basic police academy in Montrose Colorado before moving back to Alaska in 1998. He was hired by the Unalaska Department of Public Safety in May of 1999 and started his law enforcement career in Alaska. Since the start of his Law Enforcement career he has been awarded medals for valor and lifesaving as well as the Red Cross Home Town heroes award and The Hero award from the Palmer Chamber of Commerce.
Pete is currently an instructor in EVOC (emergency vehicle operations), RADAR, LIDAR, Datamaster supervisor, SFST (Standardized Field Sobriety testing), DITEP (Drug Impairment training for educational professionals), ARIDE (Advanced Road Side Impaired Driving Enforcement), Drugs that impair driving and he is one of only approximately 4000 nationwide instructors for the Drug Evaluation and Classification program through NHTSA. He is one of only 25 DRE (Drug Recognition Experts) in the State of Alaska and is called as an expert witness on impaired driving issues routinely. Pete is also a Glock and Colt factory certified armorer and has worked on numerous firearms for different agencies.
Pete learned to shoot when he was 5 years old and harvested his first caribou, bear and moose at the age of 7. Pete has spent a lifetime hunting and shooting in the state of Alaska and is an NRA life member. In 2015 Pete became an NRA certified handgun instructor and also attended and graduated from the Front Sight Academy basic handgun class.
