Rachel Gernat has nearly 15 years of experience in prosecuting crimes and almost 20 years as an attorney in the State of Alaska. Ms. Gernat is a retired Assistant District Attorney whom specialized in prosecuting crimes of violence: Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, Sexual Abuse of Minor, Child Abuse, and On-line Exploitation of Children. Ms. Gernat has an intimate working knowledge of gun laws and the gray area of self-defense. In addition to the endless courtroom hours, Ms. Gernat spends her “free” time training law enforcement, prosecutors, forensic nurses and advocates in her areas of expertise. She also speaks to community members and children on internet safety. Ms. Gernat has prosecuted cases in communities all over Alaska.
In 2008, Ms. Gernat was awarded the Victims for Justice Role Model Award. That same year she published: Avoiding the Pitfalls of Prosecuting Internet Crimes Against Children: Inside the Minds: Strategies for Prosecuting Internet Pornography Cases. In 2009, Ms. Gernat was named the Alaska State Prosecutor of the Year. And, in 2011, she received the 8th Annual Light of Hope Award. Ms. Gernat is the Vice-Chair of the Governor’s Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.
